The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. * * Evaluation of PFAS Treatment System Performance This program runs from June 2024 - October 2024 Review of PFAS Treatment System Design and Performance in Private Drinking Water Wells MassDEP is working to develop guidance and recommendations for homeowners on best practices for PFAS treatment in residential private wells. To do so, we are drawing on a large database of existing treatment systems to evaluate how the system efficacy relates to various design parameters. The selected intern will assist the project team by extracting relevant information about PFAS treatment systems from reports submitted to MassDEP. Information needed includes system design parameters (such as type of treatment media, volume of media, etc.) and performance data. The intern will compile this information into a database that the team will use to evaluate system performance as a function of various design parameters. If time and interest allow, the intern will assist with the development of materials to be provided to homeowners and/or a conference presentation planned for October 2024. Additionally, relevant fieldwork opportunities may be available with the Field Assessment and Support Team. This project represents a collaboration between staff in the Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) and Bureau of Water Resources (BWR) in the Northeast Regional Office (Woburn).
