About New Castle Correctional Facility:

The New Castle Correctional Facility was established in 2002 as the first Indiana Department of Correction owned, privately managed correctional facility in the state. The contract was awarded in 2005 to The GEO Group, Inc. The facility has a maximum capacity of 3,200 adult male incarcerated individuals with security levels 1-4, special needs, and maximum security. The GEO Group, Inc. works with partners to offer a vast array of services to incarcerated individuals. This includes specialized medical care, educational and therapeutic programming, and vocational opportunities.

Role Overview:

As the Physical Plant Director, you will be responsible for management of all utility functions, coal, oil and/or gas fired powerhouse functions, and maintenance functions at a large multi-building state institution with a complex distribution system. Directs steam plant supervisor, utility supervisor, and maintenance supervisor who, in return, supervise daily operations in their respective areas. Physical plant director receives non-technical administrative supervision from an administrative official of the institution and technical assistance and consultation is available from central office engineer and public works division.

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

About the Job:

As the Correctional Physical Plant Director, you will be responsible for managing all utility, powerhouse, and maintenance functions at a State correctional facility. In this position, you will inspect daily tasks and projects for timeliness and quality, while ensuring that all maintenance employees are properly trained in equipment operations and safety procedures.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Assists and directs the steam plant supervisor in the operation of the powerhouse in determining work priorities, planning maintenance, construction and repairs, and ensuring safe and efficient generation and distribution of steam and water systems;

• Supervises water softening and water treatment plants, operation of sewage disposal plants, and entire electrical and/or air conditioning system;

• Plans, prepares work specifications or consults with outside engineers to implement repairs, renovations, remodeling, or construction to improve powerhouse or for any facility construction jobs;

• Provides long-range planning and scheduling of work within each trade section within maintenance department to coordinate with contracted jobs and seasonal advantages;

• Determines and explains to supervisors of powerhouse and maintenance section changes in policies, programs, or objectives as well as use of new tools and equipment;

• Schedules deadlines and reviews progress and operation of each department of the engineering section to ensure quality and expeditiousness of work and control of materials and expense;

• Develops training program for all trades in the engineering section including specialty trades for the powerhouse and water and sewage plants and supervises implementation of these programs;

• Coordinates and oversees the operation of the preventive maintenance program;

• Maintains inventory records, approves requisitions for supplies, equipment, and tools and prepares budget recommendations and justifications for entire engineering section;

• Ensures that all safety standards are maintained;

• Provides full range of personnel duties including setting performance standards, appraising performance of subordinate supervisors, interviewing all new applicants, determining promotions and demotions as appropriate, recommending necessary disciplinary action and advising subordinate supervisors in counseling and evaluating staff;

• Prepares long-range building plans and/or long-range construction changes throughout institution and submits to administrative official for approval;

• Performs related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

• Thorough knowledge of the methods involved in the operation and maintenance of gas, coal and oil-fired boilers as well as all equipment and/or procedures used in overall powerhouse operation;

• Thorough knowledge of safety standards to ensure efficient operation;

• Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials and equipment used in all trades;

• Thorough knowledge of the methods involved in operation of all utility functions such as water softening and treatment, sewage disposal, air conditioning and electrical distribution;

• Thorough knowledge of institution and state personnel policies, rules, and procedures;

• Thorough knowledge of and ability to plan, understand and interpret detailed plans and specifications;

• Ability to coordinate many separate maintenance, utility, and powerhouse activities into an efficient, effective operation;

• Ability to supervise, instruct, train, and direct the work of a variety of skilled craftsmen;

• Ability to maintain records and prepare a variety of reports and budget justifications;

Job Requirements con’t:

• Ability to foresee problems, make adjustments, provide long- or short-range plans and implementing preventive maintenance programs;

• Ability to keep abreast of changes and innovations in the field of powerhouse engineering, building construction and utility functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
