Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations Support Specialist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Operational Performance Assurance Organization within the Weapons Production Directorate at Los Alamos National Laboratory (TRIAD) is looking for an exceptional Operations Support Specialist to join the Operational Performance Assurance Group (COO-OPA). In this role, you will focus on the implementation of various elements of the Glovebox Safety Program. You will be expected to gain strong fundamental knowledge of LANL guidance and policy that govern nuclear and non-nuclear facilities in order to provide support to the Glovebox Safety FLM in ensuring compliance with P101-28, Glovebox Safety Program.

  • Ensures GBS Database data completeness and accuracy by tracking glove changes and performing field audits of glove types, installation and expiration dates, and glove port identification/labeling.

  • Assists the Glove Box Safety Program Manager in the completion of sharps and safety walkdowns, and related documentation.

  • Assists the Glove Box Safety Program Manager in the completion of procedure and IWD sharps reviews.

  • Performs safety audits of evolutions within the facility to ensure the process stays within the analyzed hazards related to sharps and other GBS elements.

  • Assists in the development of lessons learned and process improvement activities.

  • Participates in fact findings related to and assists in the investigation of glove breaches and failures.

  • Utilizes LANL Lean Six Sigma techniques to increase the effectiveness of the glovebox safety program.

  • Assist the development of requirements documents and procedures.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

This position will be filled at either the Operations Support Specialist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at a higher level.

Operations Support Specialist 2 $69,500-110,300

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment to effectively execute programmatic goals.

  • Knowledge of organizational practices and process improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma, Human Performance Initiative, 5S, and the ability to identify and apply similar initiatives.

  • Ability to inform and follow improvements in procedures, policies, and processes.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suite and database software.

  • Demonstrated oral, and written communication and presentation skills.

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 3 $83,900-136,600

In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level a candidate will need:

  • Demonstrated experience developing data analysis and assessment plans, developing a data management plan, and developing metrics and key performance indicators.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with customers in a customer service-related setting.

  • Experience providing guidance on procedures impacting worker safety.

  • Demonstrated expert skills with MS Office suite and database software.

Education/Experience Operations Support Specialist 2: The position requires an Associate's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience Operations Support Specialist 3: The position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

Glovebox Safety Procedures:

Knowledge of PA-RD-01015 TA-55 FOD Glovebox and Enclosure Safety Program and PA-AP-01128 TA55 Maintenance/Construction Activities in Hot Job Exclusion Areas or Entry into Posted High Contamination Area/Airborne Radioactivity Area-Shards and Latent Sharps Management.

Time Management:

Advanced time management skills as demonstrated by the ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities and deadlines.

Maintenance and Construction:

Knowledge of construction and maintenance scope and hazards, with the ability to assist with hazard mitigation.

Nuclear Facility Experience:

Demonstrated experience and direct interaction and integration with technical and management staff within a nuclear facility.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
