The Walt Disney Company Conservation and Science Technician – Marine Programs in Lake Buena Vista, Florida

In this role, you will support, assist and provide technical expertise to implement conservation programs, science-based practice, novel research, and outreach at Walt Disney’s Parks & Resorts. You will focus on marine conservation and science with a particular emphasis on sea turtle and coral reef research and conservation; however, we work as one multidisciplinary team to address dynamic needs where they arise across subject areas.

You will report to the Conservation Programs Manager, Conservation Science.

What You Will Do

  • Conducts various aspects of scientific monitoring and/or conservation field work including wildlife monitoring and habitat protection, ecological/community surveys, and habitat restoration.

  • Collects, processes and visualizes data, and produces reports or presentations with visual appeal and clarity for partners; reviews videos; conducts literature searches, maintains databases and archival tools.

  • Provides support for meetings, classes, and workshops and supplies findings for staff seminars, team meetings, scientific journals, conference presentations, popular publications, and social media.

  • Develops and updates standard operating guidelines, and provides technical support, organization and maintenance for equipment and safe workspaces, and ensuring hazardous waste compliance.

  • Orders and distributes supplies, maintains inventory, and assists with quality assurance.

  • Provides flexibility across Science Operations and Conservation teams and other science and conservation working groups to support operational and strategic goals.

  • Engages with diverse Disney teams in the training and daily coordination of cast members and operating participants when on-boarding or for specific initiatives or projects.

  • Supports communication efforts, helps build original content and interactive, interpretive experiences, and engages regularly with Guests and other audiences to share our stories. Supports external partnerships to advance conservation, research, and public engagement.

  • Conducts underwater field surveys while maintaining a safe diving environment by adhering to established safety protocols and procedures.

  • Supports and promotes a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Demonstrated computer, written and verbal communication and social skills for formal and informal audiences of all ages, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

  • Experience with environmental data collection.

  • Enthusiasm for animal conservation.

  • Ability to support multiple projects with high attention to detail and ability to problem solve.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as within dynamic team environment.

  • Experience with data analysis and/or data processing and maintenance

  • Familiarity with work management platforms such as Smartsheet, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, etc.

  • Scuba certification from a recognized organization (e.g., PADI, NAUI) with emphasis on dive-safety practices and knowledge of dive gear maintenance and servicing requirements.

  • Full availability with work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts. Willing to travel and work in remote areas alone or as a team.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and in view of the public. Ability to endure heat, humidity, biting insects, and other challenges associated with work in the field on associated conservation projects.

  • Possession of or ability to acquire a valid passport.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in zoos/aquariums and/or with wildlife.

  • Minimum one year experience with outreach/Guest interaction/public speaking.

  • Field experience either with sea turtle nesting beach monitoring or coral reef monitoring Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) certification

  • Familiarity with new technologies (e.g. machine learning, augmented/virtual reality) and restoration

  • Additional technical expertise that can be used across conservation and science programs such as: Experience with spatial analysis, particularly using ESRI/ArcGIS systems, advanced data management and visualization skills, proficiency in R or related statistical analysis program, and experience with photogrammetry technology and software (e.g., Agisoft MetaShape Pro, TagLab, etc.)

Education

  • B.S. (or equivalent experience) in biology, marine biology, animal or conservation science, psychology or social science, laboratory science, science communication or related field
