Description We are seeking a meticulous and experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join our team. As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will be responsible for assessing and evaluating mortgage applications to ensure they meet regulatory requirements, lender guidelines, and risk mitigation standards. Your role will involve analyzing financial documents, verifying the accuracy of information provided, and making informed decisions regarding loan approvals or rejections. Successful candidates will possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of mortgage lending practices.

Responsibilities:

Review and analyze mortgage loan applications to determine creditworthiness, eligibility, and compliance with lending guidelines. Evaluate applicants' financial status, including income, assets, credit history, and debt-to-income ratio, to assess risk and likelihood of repayment. Verify the accuracy and completeness of all supporting documentation, including income verification, employment history, bank statements, tax returns, and property appraisals. Calculate loan-to-value (LTV) ratios, debt ratios, and other financial metrics to assess risk and make informed lending decisions. Interpret and apply underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards to ensure loans meet industry standards and compliance regulations. Communicate with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders to gather additional information, resolve discrepancies, and clarify requirements. Prepare and present clear, concise, and well-documented underwriting decisions, including explanations for approval or denial, to management and relevant parties. Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions affecting mortgage lending practices. Collaborate with internal teams to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and maintain high-quality standards in underwriting operations. Requirements Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, preferably in a banking or financial services environment. Strong knowledge of mortgage lending practices, underwriting principles, and regulatory requirements (e.g., FHA, VA, USDA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac). Proficiency in using underwriting software, loan origination systems (LOS), and other relevant tools and technology. Excellent analytical skills with the ability to assess complex financial information and make sound lending decisions. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate underwriting decisions clearly and concisely. Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and thoroughness in reviewing documentation and data. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple loan files simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners. detail oriented certifications such as Certified Mortgage Underwriter (CMU) or similar credentials are a plus.
