Job Description

The Global Engineering Solutions (GES) Director of Estimating is a key position in the Project Business & Solutions (PBS) team whose function is to provide effective and innovative cost solutions to our business partners to maximize their value and for our teams to ensure successful project execution. The Director of Estimating will lead a Global team and be an active member of the PBS Leadership Team.

The successful candidate will provide technical support for planning and estimating capital projects, from feasibility studies and FEL, through execution and start-up. The candidate must have strong skills in the areas of people management, estimating, planning, and benchmarking. The position supports multiple projects, that range small to large capital programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leads diverse team to serve a portfolio of strategic and standard segmented projects by developing capital estimates from long range capital planning, scope development, execution to completion and financial closeout within time, budget, EHS, and quality constraints.

  • Assembles, develops, and motivates cross-functional teams, internal and external resources to develop scope and execute projects.

  • Collaborate across multiple GES functions, internal partners, and geographies to develop estimating requirements and strategies.

  • Ensures team: adheres to standard work; identifies least cost scope and ensures competitive scope options are visible, properly quantified and in line with critical to success factors for the project; ensures Target Value Design process is implemented on projects and facilitator is trained; and escalates emerging issues/challenges in a timely fashion to enable proactive vs reactive mitigations.

  • Effective utilization of the change management and control processes and the ability to clearly articulate change requirements to deliver successful project objectives.

  • Utilize and continuously improve/develop quantitative data and benchmarks to validate estimates and inform team and management decision making, in collaboration with internal and external relationships

  • Lead and resource estimate risk analysis sessions

  • In collaboration with the GES Project Controls group, set up project budgets per standard work breakdown structure and support preparation of project return cost data and close-out reports.

  • Monitor and report on estimating metrics, trends, cost variances, and performance indicators to identify areas for improvement and inform management decisions.

  • Lead development of comprehensive annual Market Intelligence and Market Conditions Report

  • Support Estimating Steward and team with business data requests and market intelligence. Provide input on design and execution approaches inclusive of risk management.

  • Stay updated with industry development, emerging technologies, and advancements in cost estimating methodologies, and incorporate relevant tools and techniques into the estimating process.

  • Champion and deliver Estimating Education

  • Champion Integrated Project Delivery fostering key partnerships

  • Steward of the GES Governance Process

As a global role and given the need to improve and establish standard work around conceptual estimating, benchmarking, and governance, it is critical for the Director to have a strong track record in the following:

  • Proven effective managerial experience in leading groups of diverse technical teams (external and internal), in multiple locations, by setting clear intent and expectations; focusing on professional development, succession planning, and coaching, as needed.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface effectively with all levels of colleagues in a team environment, and with external customers

  • Global perspective and prior international experience preferred.

  • Broad knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry across multiple project types (drug substance, drug product, lab, large and small molecule, etc.) and all lines of business (Research and Development, Human Health, Animal Health)

  • Strong thought and opinion leader and experience establishing solutions through collaboration and strong leadership.

  • Ability to think strategically for a long-term vision in terms of culture, behavior, business processes and tools, yet meet tactical needs and tailor solutions.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Engineering discipline and advanced education preferred)

Required:

  • 10 + years of Estimating, Project Control, Design, Capital Management, and/or Project Management experience

  • Ability to travel across our Company sites up to 25% of their time.

Preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of estimating, capital management, and financial processes

  • Experience in Lean Project Delivery Methodologies (e.g., Target Value Delivery and Last Planner®, Takt planning)

  • Knowledge of our Company’s Capital Management processes

  • Strategic planning or portfolio management experience

  • Lean/Six Sigma experience, change management expertise.

  • Knowledge of AE, CM and Professional Service providers estimating means and methods

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based positions in the U.S. will be working a Hybrid work consisting of three total days on-site per week, generally Tuesday, Wednesday and either Monday or Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence. Expected salary range:

$164,800.00 - $259,400.00
