The Salvation Army Director of Development in Akron, Ohio

Overview

Job Overview: As the Director of Development, you will play a pivotal role in raising the funds necessary to continue to serve individuals and families in need in Summit County. Working closely with our dedicated team and under the guidance of the Area Coordinators, you will develop and implement comprehensive strategies to engage major donors, corporate sponsors, granting foundations, and community partners. Your efforts will directly contribute to our ability to fulfill our mission.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual advancement plan with projected revenue that includes major donors, corporate and organizational foundations, corporate sponsorship packages, and special event efforts.

  • Identify, cultivate, and retain individual major donor support, directly managing a portfolio of 75-100 high net worth major gift ($2500+) donors and prospective donors, increasing overall SCAS funding in these areas year over year.

  • Identify, cultivate, and retain corporate sponsors and partnerships, increasing overall SCAS funding in these areas year over year.

  • Oversee the Donor and Grants Specialist to ensure timely acknowledgement of gifts, stewardship and cultivation of mid-level donors, submission of new and renewal grant requests to corporate and private foundations, and the creation of impact reports to demonstrate gift outcomes.

  • Oversee the Volunteer Coordinator ensuring that individual and corporate volunteer relationships are being stewarded well and actively integrate volunteer engagement strategies into broader fundraising campaigns and initiatives while identifying opportunities to leverage volunteer networks for donor cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation efforts.

  • Coordinate public relations activities and special events, including the annual Community Medal Award Luncheon/Red Kettle Kickoff event under the direction of the Area Coordinators.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with a minimum of seven years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience, including demonstrated leadership and a strong track record of success with major gift and campaign experience.

  • Solid analytical thinker with strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to network, connect and build rapport quickly.

  • Proven creativity in approaching development with the ability to craft compelling fundraising materials and deliver persuasive presentations along with a comprehensive understanding of fundraising essentials and best practices in philanthropy.

  • A high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussion of personal and family finances and making six-figure asks.

  • Highly collaborative and team-oriented approach, with the ability to work effectively with staff, board members, volunteers, and external stakeholders.

  • Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well under pressure while managing multiple activities.

  • Knowledge of Summit County’s philanthropic environment, preferred, with the ability to represent The Salvation Army to a broad range of community constituents.
